I am always pleasantly surpised how many new and beautiful places exist in Vienna that wait to be discovered even if I am living here for 10 years already. One of these places is the concrete tower Hubertus-Warte, named after HI. Hubert(us) (656-727, Bishop of Lütich).
During the First World War a military observation tower was erected on the Kaltbründlberg, the highest mountain of Hietzing. After the fall of the tower, a new lookout tower was demanded by visitors to the Lainzer Tiergarten, which was made available to the public after the war. In 1937 the War Victims Fund, which had been transferred to the Tiergarten of the Republic of Austria, erected today's Hubertus after much hesitation.

To get to the tower one has to enter through Gütenbachtor and walk around 4,4km. Following the charming and well labeled paths one can enjoy the feeling being in the wild forest with chances to see wild hogs and still meet other people walking and jogging :)
Since the way to the tower might be long for some a refreshment is provided :)
During my visit I was lucky to meet almost always friendly elderly couples. You greet them, they are greating you back...feels like you meet friends all the time. Strange how this happens mostly in places without high density of population...
After 45 - 60 min, depending on your speed of walking, you can finaly see the tower itself, hidden between the trees.
From the tower you can enjoy a view to Vienna that not many have seen.
I find the nature fascinating. The trees are astonishing!
